Marsh Creek Skate Park Dedication

Tuesday September 30th, 2008 at Marsh Creek Park.  The park is located at 3016 New Hope Road in Raleigh, NC.

If you can manage to sneak out of work/school (j/k about the school) and show your support that’d be cool, but it you can’t, we understand.  I’ll take some photos and maybe some video for archival purposes and post it up on Tuesday. In the meantime check out the new “Harsh Creak” blog.

UPDATE:

Here are a few photos taken during the dedication:

Harsh Creak!

That is the name of a new blog that’s going to keep tabs on the construction of the Raleigh Skatepark at Marsh Creek.  Jer and Jayrock are going to post construction photos, updates, and any issues that pop up during construction. I’ll keep you posted here, of course, and post periodically of what Jer and Jay are up to over there.  Artisan will be the “skatepark” builders of this new park (as well as the new Durham park that’s still in the planning/design phase).

Check out the logo Jer designed

Here’s a cheesy mock-up of where the park will be situated

A Thief Called Out

http://www.socalbeachmag.net/images/2007_1_17_Mission_Beach_Skateboarding_Swimsuit_Photos_302-reszie-logo.jpg Rob Nelson of eastcoastaholic.com got all his stuff stolen yesterday (Sep. 18). He replaced his home page with the information he wishes the thief to read. I found this interesting and sad at the same time. Interesting in the fact that Rob is using the power of his website to let everyone know, he saw the theif and knows he’s local. It’s sad because Rob busts’ his ass to report on the local scene on the east coast and is a great guy. I doubt he cares as much about his gear as he does about the content stored inside of it.  So if you have any information please call Rob (number is on the screen shot) or post here.

Black Label Turns 20!

From Transworld Skateboarding’s site:

After 20 years’ worth of straight rawness, a celebration was definitely in order. Matt Hensley’s pub was the place, the Black Label crew were the people, and as for the party?

Chet should see a dentist–damn Luda!

Pro Skater Van Wastell has Died

Details are a bit sketchy but it seems he fell from a balcony or a window while in Berlin, Germany on a Vans tour.  Van was 24 years old. I just hope it wasn’t some stupid shit that caused his death. The guy was supposed to be Krooked Skateboards‘ newest pro.  This is the second high-profile skateboarder to die in little over a year. Last March Shane Cross died while in Australia–he was only 21.

Update: Seems Van took some pain killers. Some reports said he was drinking beer and wanted to go to the hospital then fell out of a window. I’ll post more when I find out. More “info” can be found here, here, here, and here.

An Original Skate Park for Durham, NC

The new Durham, NC skatepark looks amazing and  very different from your  average skatepark.

Dcp_skate2
from bullcityrising.com:

“Supporters of a long-awaited skateboard park for the Bull City will be pleased to learn that tonight’s consent agenda provides for the formal approval of a design-build contract for the facility, to be built in-ground at Durham Central Park.”

“Durham Central Park went along with the idea, though, and the Council is expected to approve an agreement with Lumina Builders of Wrightsville Beach and Pillar Design Studios of Tempe, Az. for the project.”

Update: White Phantom from the eastcoastSURF.com forums posted this:

I’ve been following this for a while now by calling city staff time to time and asking questions. Looks like things may be moving forward… Obviously all this is subject to change, but here’s what I know separate of what is posted at bullcityrising:
-Park to be open dawn-to-dusk (no lights) and free.
-Pads required, but no talk (at least yet) of strict enforcement.
-1 or 2 public information meetings are supposed to take place within the next couple of months. They confirmed over the phone that I’m on the email list to receive notice of the meetings, so I’ll post dates when I hear. No depths, type of coping, etc decided yet for the bowl, so that topic should be up for discussion during the meetings. Not sure whether other design elements are up for discussion.
-Not confirmed, but I hear that Artisan will subcontract for the park/tranny work and Lumina Builders will do other non-skatepark work (similar to Raleigh, I guess).
-Current projected completion date is March 2009. Most people probably agree that’ll change, but this week’s approval of the contract at least is a sign things are moving forward.
I’m all for more parks, but gotta give a SHOUT — long live the backyard scene too!
